The SRG Battle Broads brought home another road win with a narrow victory against the Rt. 66 Roller Girls in Amarillo, TX. The bout came down to the last jam with a final score of 159 – 157 SRG. The bout started off rough for the officials with malfunctioning whistles resulting in several false start and no start jams. With help from contraband whistles from fans, the issue was quickly resolved.

Power jams were not kind to SRG resulting in a quick lead for Rt. 66. The Battle Broads trailed behind 18 points at the end of the first period with the official score standing at 62 – 44 Rt. 66.

In the second half it was the Battle Broad’s turn for power jams. As Rt. 66′s pack began to slow and show signs of fatigue, SRG kept the hard hits coming. Pivot MaryLou Wretched narrowly escaped ejection from the game after 6 trips to the penalty box but powerful blocking helped SRG close the gap and finally pull ahead 155 – 147 with 1:14 left in the game.

In the final jam both jammers receive minor penalties making both ineligible for lead. SRG jammer, Annabel Lector, manages to gain the necessary points to get the win. Final Score 159 – 157 SRG.

Get yourself ready to try out for the Springfield Roller Girl’s 2012 season! Come learn skating and roller derby basics from the ONLY WFTDA accredited league in Springfield!

In order to produce quality roller derby skaters SRG had to close down their long standing open recruitment for the first time in 2011. Recruitment will open back up in January of 2012 with a tryout and draft being held at the end of the month. Get ahead of your class by attending this 6 session workshop. Learn about the rules and basic strategy of flat track roller derby and perfect your booty block BEFORE the open recruitment begins.

Boot Camp Dates:
Saturday, October 22nd
Saturday, October 29th
Saturday, November 5th
Saturday, November 19th
Saturday, December 3rd
Saturday, December 17th

All camps will be held from 9am to noon at Skateport on South Glenstone.

FAQ

What should I bring to camp?
Please bring a helmet and water on your first day of camp. You will need to wear comfortable athletic clothing. If you do not own skates we will provide them for you. If you would like to purchase all of your protective gear ahead of time please email join@springfieldrollergirls.com for brand recommendations.

Do I need insurance to play roller derby or to attend the camp?
Personal Health Insurance is not required but it is strongly recommended. Roller derby is a full contact sport and there is a risk of injury. SRG and Skateport ask that you sign a liability waiver before putting on your skates.

I haven’t skated in years…
That’s ok! We designed this camp to prepare potential derby girls for the 2012 season! Get over the fist day jitters months in advance! We do suggest attending at least one open skating session at Skateport before the camp just to get comfortable on your skates.

Please don’t hesitate to send any questions or concerns to join@springfieldrollergirls.com.

The Springfield Roller Girls had an up and down pair of bouts at their Bike Night Double Header last night at Skateport resulting in a Battle Broads loss and All-Stars Win.

The SRG Battle Broads took on the ladies of Mo-Kan Roller Girlz. It was a long tough bout that appeared early to be a fairly even match. Late in the first half Mo-Kan began to pull away. The BB fought hard but it wasn’t enough to stop Mo-Kan’s run. Final: 160-95 Mo-Kan.

Next the All-Stars battled their rivals, the ICT Roller Girls of Wichita, KS. The bout quickly became a hard-hitting match. SRG All-Stars took the lead from the start, and despite a losing one of its star jammers to an injury in the first half, manages to strengthen their lead. After an increasing number of heavy penalty jams and several official reviews due to tricky jammer penalty situations, the SRG All-Stars proved their abilities in full-fledged WFTDA level of play. Final: 196-108 SRG All-Stars.

The Springfield Roller Girls’ next home bout is scheduled for August 20th at Skateport when the Battle Broads take on Team Unicorn.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (June 1, 2011) — June 1, 2011 is a day of celebration for the Springfield Roller Girls as the league’s long-term goal of becoming a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), the national governing body for women’s amateur flat track roller derby in the U.S., came to fruition. As a new member of the WFTDA, the Springfield Roller Girls joins the ranks of over 75 all-female, skater owned and operated leagues nationwide that have united to lead the growing sport of women’s flat track roller derby.

WFTDA member leagues engage in sanctioned interleague play, including regional and national tournaments. SRG will be a Class B member in the South Central region. The SRG All Stars and Battle Broads will take on the South Central Region’s No. 9 ranked Green Country on Sunday, June 5 in Tulsa, OK. The All Stars will play No. 16 ranked NWA All Stars at home on Saturday, June 25. Wins at both of these bouts will allow the SRG All Stars to begin earning high ranking in their region. The top 10 teams in the region will be invited to play in the South Central Region Playoffs, which will be held in Kansas City Sept. 30 through Oct. 2, 2011. The top three teams at regional tournaments move on to the national WFTDA Championships. The Springfield Roller Girls was one of just eight leagues graduating to full WFTDA status in June. Other leagues accepted include the Babe City Rollers of Bemidji, Minnesota; Cape Fear Roller Girls of Wilmington, North Carolina; Castle Rock and Rollers of Castle Rock, Colorado; Charlotte Rollergirls of Charlotte, North Carolina; Fairbanks Rollergirls of Fairbanks, Alaska; Rocktown Rollers of Harrisonburg, Virginia; and Toronto Roller Derby of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

About the WFTDA Founded in 2004, the WFTDA promotes and fosters the sport of women’s flat track derby by facilitating the development of athletic ability, sportswomanship, and goodwill among member leagues. The governing philosophy is “by the skaters, for the skaters.” Women skaters are primary owners, managers, and operators of each member league and of the association. WFTDA’s operational tasks include setting standards for rules, seasons and safety, and determining guidelines for the national and international athletic competitions of member leagues. All member leagues have a voice in the decision-making process, and agree to comply with the governing body’s policies. For more information, visit www.wftda.com.
