How did you choose your derby name? Any special meaning?
My derby name just kind of fell together, it’s my number that holds real meaning for me. After my father died, I retired my old name and number, I felt like the world was different so I should change as well. My dad was very special to me, he always told me that I could do anything I wanted to before anyone told me otherwise, so I believed him. It didn’t matter what crazy idea I cooked up, I knew he’d be with me on it. He pushed me to try and pursue an extraordinary life. So here’s to him, Clarence E. McElwain, born February 8th 1942.
How long have you played derby?
I started derby in 2011
What is the hardest moment you have over come since joining derby? What have been some of your proudest derby accomplishments?
The hardest and proudest moment was probably when I won my first MVP. I didn’t even think I could play. It was Saturday June 14th and I had buried my dad that Friday. My coach was amazing (thank you Patrick) he told me to do what ever I could do… I screamed, I cried, I left it all on the track. When I won MVP I was worried that the other team knew and they just felt sorry for me… Turns out they just thought I was crazy, so it was all good.
Who would you say is your biggest derby supporter or ‘superfan’?
I would have to say my sisters, DeAnn Reynolds and Lydia Cole, although Danny and Sara did wear fan t-shirts to a bout once and that was super rad!
Have you had any injuries from playing roller derby?
Other then your standard scrapes and bruises, my ankle will never be right… I’m pretty sure I broke it some where along the way.
If you could have a theme song, what would it be?
Every Girl by The Turnpike Troubadours (seriously, listen to those lyrics)
Who is your derby idol?
I have so many… It’s kinda pathetic. A couple of locals that come to mind are Scissor Pit!! and T Ann T. Scissor Pit!! is a fantastic dual threat. She can block and jam like a beast, plus she’s genuinely one of the nicest people I have ever met. T Ann T hits you like a brick wall. When she hits you, It’s like when Mario dies and jumps off the side of the screen… Yeah, you know EXACTLY what I’m talking about.
Anything else you’d like the world to know?
Not really, I’m an open book. If you want to know something about me all you need do is ask, the only thing I won’t tell you is my age or my Bloody Mary recipe.
