End of an era for Skateport; beginning of a new season for the Springfield Roller Girls
Springfield Roller Girls 2014 home opener March 9, 2014 against the Mo-Kan Roller Girlz
Springfield, MO: Local roller derby team, the Springfield Roller Girls, to host the Mo-Kan Roller Girlz out of Joplin, MO on Sunday, March 9, 2014, at 6:00 p.m. for their first home bout of the season. With Skateport being scheduled to be torn down later this year, this will be the last bout that they will host at the rink, which is located at 3820 S. Glenstone. Tickets are $10.00 at the door, $8.00 in advance and available at Skateport, from your favorite roller girl, or at brownpapertickets.com. Kids 6 and under are always free.
The Springfield Roller Girls hope to pack the house and show their gratitude to their original home venue and rink owner Ted Hall, who has supported the league from its inception.
With the retirement of many veteran skaters, 2014 is a rebuilding year for the Springfield Roller Girls who are actively recruiting skaters, referees, and volunteers, as well as looking for sponsors. The league is still in negotiations for a new home venue and hope to be able to announce something on that front soon.
The Springfield Roller Girls is a league of skaters, volunteers, and referees who are dedicated to learning and growing the sport of roller derby, as well as being active in our community and supporting the health of local women. We’ve been doing so since 2006, and we plan to continue doing so for many years to come. We are also the only Springfield league that is a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), the governing body for women’s amateur flat track roller derby, joining the ranks of more than 200 all-female, skater-owned-and-operated leagues internationally. With our legion of bout-attending fans and over 6,100 Facebook followers, we look forward to continuing to grow.
