It is with heavy hearts that we must confirm the rumors of Skateport closing in 2014. MoDOT has plans to widen Glenstone Avenue and extend Independence Street through the intersection where it now comes to a T. The extension will go right through the rink. Ted Hall, the rink’s owner, fought this for as long as he could, but ended up deciding to sell rather than face eminent domain.
We have already had some concerned fans and players from other leagues sending us messages asking how this would affect the future of the Springfield Roller Girls. We are currently looking for a new practice facility and/or bout venue, and we will announce what we find when we find it. For now, we are still holding practices at Skateport and still heavily recruiting.
Our first home bout of the season currently scheduled for March 8, 2014 against the Mo-Kan Roller Girlz from Joplin, Missouri will be our last bout at the rink. If you happen to have that weekend free, we encourage you to consider joining us. Keep an eye out for ticket specials and giveaways.
Skateport has been providing safe, family friendly entertainment to kids, teens, adults, schools, churches, and organizations for nearly 40 years. It will be sorely missed by a good portion of this city’s population, who now consider it a city staple and landmark. We want to send a special thank you to the entire Hall family, past and present, for all of the great memories.
